VMWare Workstation 10 issue with Windows 8.1 Update (KB2995388)

Surprise of the day: when I try to launch my VM, I am greeted with the following message saying my machine does not not enough physical memory to power on my VM:

vmware workstation 10 - memory issues

That’s not possible. This particular VM is configured to use 2GB RAM, and my machine has at least 5x more than that.

It seems the culprit is the recent Windows 8.1 Update (KB2995388)

VMWare is aware of the issue, and their blog has recommended uninstalling the KB2995388 patch until they issue a fix.

Update Oct 30

VMWare issued a fix to the issue above. This applies to VMWare Workstation 10 and VMWare Player 6.
